Toronto, ON., December 6, 2011 – With more and more assignments from not-for-profit organizations as well as corporations looking for communications support for their philanthropic activities, Hill & Knowlton Canada has aggregated its expertise into a new group called Hill & Knowlton Good Works. “The work we’ve been doing with not-for-profits on everything from launches and fundraising support to issues management and advocacy has grown incredibly over the past five or six years,” said Mike Coates. “At the same time, our assignments from companies for corporate and brand philanthropy are also growing.  We’ve developed such deep expertise that it’s deserving of its own specialty group.”As part of the introduction of H&K Good Works, the group looked at how the 40 highest-earning not-for-profits in Canada (based on 2009 T3013 Canada Revenue Agency data) handled social media channels in October 2011. The findings are captured in an infographic, but highlights include:

  • The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation was the most influential nonprofit in October 2011 (not surprising given it was Breast Cancer Awareness month), followed closely by the Art Gallery of Ontario
  • 15% of Canada’s top 40 nonprofits have no social channels on their website homepages
  • More charities promote their Twitter profiles than Facebook pages
  • The Salvation Army led the pack on Twitter, with more than 11,400 followers, but the United Way of Toronto was the most talkative
  • Doctors Without Borders ruled Facebook, with more than 434,000 fans, but the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation had the most posts
