Talia is a journalist and masters candidate in Food Systems at NYU. She currently reports for Heritage Radio Network and VICE Food, and is a summer Julia Child Fellow at Food52. +1 What do you read to keep current on the latest trends and news?
Well, I’ve got BBC News and the New York Times as homepages, so I always scan those. My inbox is inundated every day with news round-ups. I’m a food reporter, so I love Politico’s Morning Ag, the Modern Farmer round-up, my former professor Marion Nestle’s Food Politics blog, the USDA FSIS news updates and the Meridian Institute’s AGree NewsFeed. I always bookmark at least a few things from the Atlantic Wire’s five best columns. When I want restaurant trends, I trust Eater (I subscribe to New York, New Orleans, Montreal and the National updates) and Tasting Table with my life. CNN’s Eatocracy, GrubStreet and BuzzFeed Food are some of my personal favorites. I’m also a Twitter addict: I’ve been @taliabethralph since 2009 and haven’t looked back.
+ 2 If you could live in any city, where would it be and why?
The city I live in right now — New York! I’ve been both obsessed with/terrified of this place for as long as I can remember, and I’ve finally gotten brave enough (and lucky enough) to live here. It can be overwhelming, but if you’re a city person like I am, the pace is totally energizing. It also helps that I’m studying a subject that I’m head-over-heels passionate about, in one of the food and media capitals of the world. Oh, and there’s pizza slices for a dollar.
+3 What’s your “plan B” if you need to spontaneously switch careers?
I love being a journalist and editor because it lets me dabble in a lot of careers I’m passionate about, like social media, non-profits, law, politics, teaching and cooking. I’ve got two fantasy back-up plans if this doesn’t work out, though: one is to open a neighborhood bar/restaurant, and the other is to become a lawyer who advocates for food workers’ rights (my hero these days is Saru Jayaraman, of ROC United). Easy switches, right?
+4 Most coveted superpower?
It would probably torment me endlessly, but I’d love to be able to read people’s minds. I think it’d be very useful in my line of work — though I’m not sure I’d be able to put those thoughts on the record.
+ 5 Looking back, which moment in your career are you most proud of and why?
I still have a lot to learn, but I am really proud of myself for making the decision to come back to school. It wasn’ t something I saw myself doing, at least until much later in life, and I was so sad to leave my job and the small gains I’d made in the freelancing world. But being a student again has opened up whole new worlds and ways of thinking to me — and brought on a lot of great new opportunities!
